Staff Report

Lindale—Jonathan Layton, 40, was shot at his home by a deputy from the Smith County's Sheriff's Office on Nov. 5.

The sheriff's office was called after Layton allegedly made verbal threats toward his former employer following his termination of employment in downtown Lindale. When the deputies arrived at the business, Layton had already gone home.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Office proceeded to Layton's house.

He was taken to the hospital, where Layton was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was ordered, and Layton's body was transported to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The Texas Rangers are investigating as a part of the standard protocol for an officer-involved shooting. The deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.
